Privacy Policy
Last updated 22 October 2026
The short version: Mochi.md doesn't collect, send or share any of your data. The app has no networking code, no analytics, no ads, no tracking and no accounts. Your files stay on your Mac. This website (not the app) uses Google Analytics to count visits, as explained below.
This policy covers the Mochi.md app for macOS, its Quick Look extension, and this website (mochimd.app). Mochi.md is made by Barnaby Carter ("I", "me").
The app
What I collect
Nothing. Mochi.md never sends anything about you or your files to me or to anyone else. There are no analytics or crash-reporting libraries inside the app, and everything it needs to display your documents (the renderer, fonts, diagram and math libraries) is bundled inside it. Images on the web referenced by a document are never fetched.
Why the app has a "network" permission
Apple's web view, which Mochi.md uses to display documents, can't start inside the App Sandbox without the outgoing-network permission, even when it only shows local files. Mochi.md has the permission for that reason only. It makes no network requests, and the rendered page is locked down so it can't load anything from the internet.
What stays on your Mac
To do its job, Mochi.md keeps a few things locally, inside its own sandboxed storage on your Mac. None of it is ever sent anywhere.
- Your files. Mochi.md reads and edits the files and folders you choose, exactly where they are. It doesn't copy them anywhere else, except as described below.
- Settings. Your theme and other preferences. The Quick Look extension reads your theme so previews in Finder match the app.
- Folder permissions. macOS lets the app remember which files and folders you've given it access to, so it can reopen them. You can forget image-folder permissions in Settings.
- Reading history. To show "what changed since you last read it", Mochi.md keeps a private copy of each file as you last read it. These copies stay on this Mac, are excluded from Time Machine and iCloud backups, skip files over 2 MB, and are capped at 200 MB in total. You can clear them, or turn the feature off and delete them all, in Settings.
- Recovered text. In the rare case a file can't be saved when you quit, Mochi.md keeps your unsaved text in its own storage so your work isn't lost.
Deleting the app removes all of this.
Purchases and Apple
Mochi.md is sold through the Mac App Store. Apple handles payment, and I don't receive your name, email address or payment details. Apple gives me sales totals only.
If you've chosen in macOS settings to share crash and usage data with app developers, Apple may pass anonymous crash reports for Mochi.md to me. That is controlled by Apple and by your settings, not by the app, and Apple's own privacy policy applies to it.
This website
Nothing on this website is connected to the app. Visiting mochimd.app tells me nothing about your files, and using the app tells me nothing about your visits here.
Google Analytics
mochimd.app uses Google Analytics to show me how many people visit, which pages they read,
roughly where they're from, and how they found the site. Google Analytics sets first-party
cookies (named _ga and _ga_1GHB7MP3Q1) to tell a returning visitor
apart from a new one. It collects things like the pages you view, your browser, device and
screen size, the site that sent you here, and an approximate location worked out from your IP
address. Google says Google Analytics doesn't log or store IP addresses.
I see this only as totals and trends, not as information about you personally. I don't use it for advertising, I haven't turned on Google's advertising features, and I don't share Analytics data with Google for its own products. Detailed visitor data is deleted after two months. Google processes the data as described in How Google uses information from sites that use its services.
To opt out, block cookies for mochimd.app in your browser, use a content blocker, or install Google's Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. The site works the same either way.
Hosting
The site is hosted on Amazon Web Services, which handles basic technical information, such as your IP address, in order to deliver the pages to you. I don't keep access logs of visits.
If you email me
If you contact support, I'll use your email address and whatever you choose to send only to reply and help you. I won't add you to a mailing list or share your message. You can ask me to see, correct or delete it at any time.
Children
Mochi.md collects no data from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new "last updated" date. If the app ever starts handling your data differently, the change will be explained here and in the App Store release notes before it happens.
